I realized that I needed a personal trainer so I went on a search for one that finally ended on a high note. Initially, I headed back to Golds but they were less than helpful and I walked away extremely disappointed. I spoke to a trainer there and said that I was not interested in tracking my weight--I shared a lot about that--and then he told me that the first thing he would do in our work together is "weigh you and take all of your measurements so I can track your progress." Welllll mister, you didn't listen to me so I'm outta here. I got home, feeling very frustrated and didn't know what to do next. I started googling gyms in Eugene and came across a studio that echoed all of the things that I currently care about (health, wellness). I called them and they scheduled me for a consultation with the owner---which I thought was strange at first because I just wanted information about their facility and their services. To my surprise, the owner spent nearly two hours with me discussing my goals, their philosophy, what I am seeking, what kind of "plan" may work for me, what hasn't worked for me in the past, etc. It seriously felt like an intake session I would do with a client. I left there feeling inspired, heard, and motivated. I have been working with a trainer now for a week and I am loving it. He is incredible--and does not focus on size, weight, etc. He's focused on how I'm feeling, what my body can do, and teaching me about my muscles and how my body works. It's seriously the best self-care I have ever committed to. We have a personal training schedule for about 10 weeks and then I will likely start an individual Pilates training program.
Right now, I am focused on a training regimen with my trainer three days a week (not cheap, yet an awesome investment). I'm sore, but enthusiastic. :) And already feeling very strong again.

Getting Healthy, Ph.D.
After the grueling years of our doctoral education, it's time to leave the late nights of writing behind and focus on our overall wellness. We aim to share our stories of getting back in the game of health, by writing about increasing our physical activity and focusing on healthy/mindful eating. Though not a competition, we hope to offer each other support as we take on this new challenge from different places. In the famous words of Wayne and Garth, "Game Onnnnn."

Lets get the ball rolling!
First off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO TIFF!! What better day for me to kick this off? I, like Tiffany, need to focus a little better on living a healthier lifestyle. This is our attempt to support and encourage each other to make the time and the effort... And hopefully, this will chronicle our journey and progress.
For me, I really would like to improve my eating habits (less fast food and NO SODA! ...I realize that this may be a little optimistic for me, seeing as I love the soda...) And I'd also like to put that gym membership to some good use, even if it is just lifting weights a few times a week. I've been pretty good lately about walking the dogs for a few miles at night, but also have many many days where I get home and am too lazy/tired to do it. One of my main goals would be to get my body back in pre-back-injury-and-surgery state. Can it be done?? Stay tuned to find out!

Good Intentions...
Brandy and I have been talking quite frequently about how much we want to get in shape and start feeling healthier and better about ourselves. For me, this is usually an easy feat when it comes to eating the right foods and nurturing my emotional self. However, my physical self is usually quite neglected in the process, making the other pieces null and void as my core parts are not interacting well together.
Enter our new project....
We kept saying that we needed to find a way to work out together even though we are 980 miles apart (I calculated). Hopefully, through our commitment to each writing at least 3 blog posts a week, noting our goals and accomplishments, we will find the support and team spirit we have been wanting. We may even throw in a few pictures and fun antidotes about our process. What this blog is not is a weight loss numbers game. I'm a strong believer that "getting healthy" is about our core parts working together for an overall health regime, versus a fight to the death with the scale. We do not want to promote the thin ideal, but rather promote our commitment to GETTING HEALTHY.
